Family Learning

Family Learning courses are designed for parents, carers and grandparents to learn together with their children or with other parents. All courses are fun, creative and informative with learning outcomes intended for both the adult and their children, to benefit the whole family.

Family Learning courses take place at Havering Adult College centres and a variety of other venues across the Borough. These include Children’s Centres, schools and other community venues. Our offer can range from a one-day workshop to a ten-week accredited course.

Family Learning courses are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency. These courses are intended for parents who do not have a full Level 2 qualification (or five GCSE grades A*-C) and are offered FREE of charge. We do not want to discourage other parents from benefiting from these courses; therefore, if you are a parent with a full Level 2 qualification or above, you can still join and pay a course fee.

Family Learning is also involved with different projects supporting parents and children from in and around the Borough. Here are a few…

Kitchen Social – Family Cook and Eat

Family Learning are delivering free workshops over holiday periods when schools are out to provide hot meals and learning opportunities for families who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and who would otherwise be experiencing hunger and social isolation. The Family Cook and Eat programme are working in line with the Mayor’s Fund for London’s programme, Kitchen Social. It has provided workshops for parents to come together with their children to participate in seasonal themed crafts, learn about different types of food and work together to prepare and cook a meal for their family. All families participating in the workshops sit and eat their meals together whilst enjoying the company of other families. The programme is providing support for families who are on a low income, and whose children would be missing out on a free school meal over the holidays.

If you are working within a school or an organisation who works with families experiencing such difficulties, please contact Vedia Mustafa on 01708 434946 or email familylearning@havering.gov.uk

HMP Pentonville – Story Sacks and Parenting Skills for Fathers

Havering Adult College is committed to providing opportunities for fathers / male carers, who are serving time at HMP Pentonville in order to re-engage with their children. Over the last two years, the Family Learning team have delivered Story Sacks workshops for prisoners who then later have the opportunity to share their learning and a fun story time with their children. The workshops provide the opportunity for the fathers to learn the importance of reading, making books fun and bringing them to life. Each workshop includes a family visitation where partners and children visit the prison to spend time together as a family and to give the children the opportunities of spending time with the fathers that they are not having at home.

Family Learning Forum

The Family Learning Forum takes place on a termly basis and brings together service providers and organisations working for the benefit of families and children to share information and establish new opportunities for partnership working. So far, the Family Learning Forum has seen joint working for the last two years with Housing Services and Family Mosaic delivering a fun Christmas Party event to families being supported by the services; participation at summer events on local estates; and the implementation of the Prevention of Obesity strategy in Family Learning Healthy Eating courses.
