  • Brick Lane Street Art

    Street Art is a constantly evolving art form which is recognised and appreciated by many. It moves across the derelict buildings, bus shelters and hoardings all across cities and the world. The genre is as difficult to pin down as is to define – shifting rules apply between artists. Discover the street art in and around London’s Brick Lane. The course will include a trip to London.   • Britain’s Home Front World War I

    This short introductory course will provide you with an opportunity to look at key areas of the Home Front as experienced during World War I. You will look at Germany’s U-Boat offensives and the effects on food supplies and public opinion. Home defence will be covered with questions about the effect this had on the Western Front. Public attitudes to the war will also be looked at including how ideas might have changed between 1914 and 1918.

  • Britain’s Home Front World War II

    This short introductory course will provide you with an opportunity to see how the Second World War affected those at home. You will look at the Blitzes 1940-41 and 1944-45 and their effects upon London including how people reacted. The role of women on the Home Front will be introduced with questions as to the effects of two world wars upon this part of society. Topics will also include rationing and the use of propaganda.

  • British Eccentrics

    This short course will introduce you to some of Britain’s eccentrics as we travel through the ages. You will look at the lives of some of the most famous including the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Alfred Lord Tennyson. You will be able to explore the worlds these characters inhabited and compare it with our modern world while enjoying anecdotes and famous words.

  • British Superstitions

    This short course will allow you to explore the idea of superstitions in Britain and how they might affect people. You will look at the development of superstitions and the reasons behind many including the breaking of eggshells and whether a black cat is lucky or… not. You will be able to place each superstition into its historical timeframe and see how some grew while others faded into memory.

  • Building London’s Underground

    This introductory course will look at the world’s first underground railway including its continual development. You will look at the role of art in designing stations and the famous tube map used to this day. The development of the tube and its use during the Second World War will also be explored. Famous personalities relating to the tube will also be introduced including Charles Pearson, James Henry Greathead and MacDonald Gill.

  • Chinatown and Chinese New Year

    A brief look at how the Chinese community migrated to London and how the face of London’s West End adapted. The idea of Chinese New Year and the Chinese Zodiac will be explored including how it plays a part in the lives of individuals. The course will include a trip to London to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The costs of travel and any site entry are not included within the course fees. Classroom lessons 10am to 2pm. Visit to Chinatown is from 10am to 4pm.

    For decades Elizabeth was able to play her pursuers and gain alliances and wealth just from the possibility of marriage, but she didn’t accept. Elizabeth would have 26 different marriage proposals to consider, of which about five of the suitors had multiple proposals. So did Elizabeth have lovers or was she really the Virgin Queen?

    This short course will provide you with an opportunity to look at some of history’s imperial powers including Britain, France and Spain. You will look briefly at how each empire began, including interactions with others. The course will introduce several famous characters including The Duke of Parma, Clive, Napoleon and Sir Henry Lawrence. Topics will include the growth of empires from Rome to the present, Pax Britannica and conflicts between imperial powers.

    This short course will provide you with an opportunity to visit female leaders through history. You will look briefly at how the roles and perception of women have changed. The course will introduce several famous characters including Elizabeth I, Boudicca, Catherine de Medici and Victoria. Topics will include the perception of female leaders, the changing role of women in society and how having a female leader may have affected international relationships.

  • History of London’s Transport: River, Road & Rail

    This course takes you on a journey through the history of London’s eclectic and iconic transport. Whether it’s on the water (from Thames’ ferrymen to paddle steamers), on the streets (from horse-drawn coaches & Hansom cabs to trams, buses and ‘Boris’ bikes) or on the rails (from its great terminals to its world-famous tube). The course includes the story of London’s bridges, man-made canals, ‘ghost’ underground stations and taxi shelters. There will be four trips to London.
