  • London History: “Shop ‘til you drop” – Famous Markets & Stores

    The course will take you on a fascinating journey through the history of London’s world famous markets, stores and shopping districts – from the East End to the West End – including Petticoat Lane, Spitalfields, Billingsgate, Borough, Covent Garden, Carnaby Street, Portobello Road, Burlington Arcade, Harrods, Fortnum & Masons, Gamages, Liberties – plus some of London’s more unusual and unique shops. The course also covers how to be a careful shopper – including tricks of the trade and tips on spotting fake goods. There will be six trips to London.   • London History: “Suffragette City” – Social Activism & Movements

    A poignant story of the struggle for social justice, rights and equality over the centuries – from individual protagonists to large-scale organised movements. We will explore and examine the origin and impact of activism in the capital and the success or failure of plots and rebellions – including the Peasants’ Revolt, the Suffragettes, the Matchgirl Strikers and the Anti-Fascist Movement.   • London History: “Tales of the Riverbank” – Old Father Thames

    As the River Thames has long provided the main artery in the capital; this course takes you on a fascinating journey through its history. You will explore its ancient origins and settlement on its banks; how it has been the start and end of epic journeys for pilgrims, explorers and adventurers; how it became home to engineering, invention and innovation; and how it has been the scene of both glorious and horrid events. The course also covers the river’s fortifications, barriers, bridges and tunnels, its docks and wharves, its great pageants, great frost fairs, great boat races and great stinks. You will learn about its people too – from famous sea captains and pirates to its watermen and dockers. The course includes two trips to London.   • London History: “That’s Entertainment (‘ave a banana)” – Music Hall/Variety Theatre

    This is a fascinating journey through time into the colourful origins and evolution of the legendary venues and performers that have provided ‘variety’ entertainment for the masses in ‘old London town’. You will experience a visual and aural feast for your delectation – from the ancient Roman Amphitheatre, medieval bear-baiting pits, Shakespearian playhouses, Victorian music halls and 20th century grand variety theatres. You won’t just focus on the stars of the stage; you will discover street musicians as well. You will be the judge on whether the superstars and bizarre speciality acts of yesteryear would get through an audition today. The course includes two trips to London.   • London History: “The rub-a-dub” – Historic Public Houses

    As we venture down back streets, alleyways and riverside walks you will discover the historical facts (and fiction) relating to famous London ‘watering-holes’ and their surrounding areas. You will see the haunts of famous patrons, such as Shakespeare, Dickens, pirates and gangsters, to those haunted by ghosts (or not)! The course includes six trips to historic areas of London, including the Docklands, the Southbank, Knightsbridge and the City of London.
