Progression Route

Select one of the levels below for more information on the levels.

PRE-ENTRY

Ideal for learners who are completely new to English or who have never been in an education setting before. Learners at this level may not be able to read or write.

PRE-ENTRY ADVANCED

Suitable for learners who can recognise some letters or very common words but cannot yet form full sentences.

ENTRY LEVEL 1

Learners can understand and give very simple information on familiar topics. They can read short, basic texts, recognise signs and symbols, and write simple sentences about themselves. Speaking is limited but functional for everyday needs.

ENTRY LEVEL 2

Learners can understand short explanations and instructions and can express basic facts, feelings, and opinions. They can read and write simple texts on familiar topics and begin to take part in short conversations with more confidence.

ENTRY LEVEL 3

Learners can understand a wider range of spoken English, including conversations and telephone instructions. They can express themselves on most everyday topics, read longer texts, and write connected sentences with more accuracy.

LEVEL 1

Learners can participate in discussions, understand detailed explanations, and communicate clearly in most everyday and work‑related situations. They can read and interpret a variety of texts and produce structured writing with appropriate grammar and vocabulary.

This level prepares learners for more formal study.

LEVEL 2

Learners can communicate effectively and fluently in a wide range of contexts, including work, study, and community settings. They can understand complex texts, express ideas clearly, and produce well‑structured writing. This level prepares learners for higher‑level study or employment requiring strong English skills.

SKILL AREAS

Each ESOL level is divided into three skill areas: Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening.

This structure recognises that learners often progress at different speeds across these skills. For example, you may feel confident speaking but still need to develop your reading or writing. For balanced progress, we recommend that learners do not study more than two levels above their weakest skill area. The knowledge gained in one area strengthens the others, helping you build a solid foundation for future learning. Your teacher may also recommend starting with a particular skill to best support your learning journey and help you achieve your goals.
