Pride Month: Why It Matters in Adult Education

Pride Month is more than a celebration—it’s a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality, visibility, and dignity for LGBTQ+ people across the world. For adult learners, many of whom are returning to education after years away, Pride offers a powerful opportunity to learn, reflect, and build a more inclusive community.

At our college, we believe that everyone—regardless of age, background, identity, or life experience—deserves to feel seen, respected, and supported. Pride Month gives us the chance to reaffirm that commitment.

Pride Month is held every June to honour the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. When police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City, the LGBTQ+ community fought back, sparking days of protest and igniting a global movement for rights and recognition.

Key figures such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, both trans women of colour, played crucial roles in the uprising and in shaping LGBTQ+ activism for decades to come.

Today, Pride is celebrated worldwide through marches, festivals, educational events, and community gatherings.

• The UK decriminalised homosexuality in 1967, but full equal rights took decades more—Section 28 wasn’t repealed until 2003.
• Same‑sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in 2014, and in Scotland the same year.
• The first Pride march in the UK took place in London in 1972 with around 2,000 participants. Today, London Pride attracts over a million people.
• LGBTQ+ people are still disproportionately affected by homelessness, mental health challenges, and workplace discrimination—highlighting the ongoing need for education and allyship.
• Inclusive education improves outcomes for all learners, not just LGBTQ+ students. Research shows that inclusive environments reduce bullying, increase engagement, and foster a stronger sense of belonging.

Adult learners bring a wealth of lived experience, but many also carry the impact of past discrimination or exclusion. Pride Month helps us:

• Create safer learning spaces where everyone feels welcome.
• Challenge stereotypes and broaden understanding.
• Support LGBTQ+ learners and staff who may not have had inclusive education earlier in life.
• Encourage open conversation about identity, equality, and respect.
• Celebrate diversity as a strength within our college community.
