Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: Opening Doors Through Volunteering
Looking to gain experience, build confidence, and make a real difference? Volunteering could be your first step towards a brighter future.
Volunteers’ Week is the perfect moment to celebrate the incredible impact volunteers have on our communities—and to shine a light on how volunteering can open doors for individuals who may be out of work or lacking experience.
Why Volunteering Matters
Volunteering is much more than giving back—it’s a powerful stepping stone for personal and professional growth. For those who may not currently be in work, or who feel they lack experience, volunteering can provide:
- Valuable work experience to build confidence and strengthen your CV
- Transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation, and problem-solving
- Opportunities to meet new people and expand your network
- A sense of routine and purpose, improving wellbeing and motivation
- Pathways into employment, as many employers value hands-on experience and community involvement
Even a few hours a week can make a meaningful difference—not just to others, but to your own future.
Volunteering in Havering
If you’re based in Havering, there are plenty of fantastic opportunities to get involved locally. From community centres and food banks to charity shops, youth groups, and support services, organisations across the borough are always looking for helping hands.
A great place to start is:
- Havering Volunteer Centre
- Local charities and community groups (many welcome direct enquiries—sending a simple email can often open the door)
- Libraries, schools, and faith-based organisations offering community support programmes
Volunteering locally allows you to connect directly with your community while gaining meaningful experience close to home.
A Real Story: Tracy McAnaney
One inspiring example of the power of volunteering comes from our own Teacher, Tracy McAnaney:
“I started volunteering at the Havering Islamic Cultural Centre soup kitchen over 8 years ago. This then led on to setting up our food bank, which has been an active part of the local community for 4 years.
I got into volunteering as my then 13-year-old wanted to do something to help people. It also allowed me to meet new people, update skills on my CV, and help the local community.
I actively encourage people to volunteer—there are many ways to find organisations that need help, a simple email is normally a good start. It can lead to employment opportunities and a massive sense of achievement.”
Tracy’s journey shows how a small first step can grow into something truly impactful—for both the individual and the wider community.
