National Careers Week is running from 2nd to 7th March and is a nationwide event that highlights the importance of good career planning and helps people of all ages explore their next steps. Why not use this time to update your CV and make sure it presents your skills clearly.

Take a look at the 5 simple CV tips our Employability teacher has put together to help you create a strong and effective CV.

1. Make your CV clear and readable

Choose a simple, professional font such as Times New Roman or Arial in size 10–12. Your name should be slightly larger and in bold so it stands out.

Keep your formatting consistent by using the same style for headings and section titles. Good spacing makes your CV easier to read.

Align your text neatly and use 2.5cm margins around the page. A tidy layout shows that you pay attention to detail.

2. Use strong action verbs

When describing your previous roles, choose verbs that show what you achieved. Words like leading, managing, delivering and helping give employers a clear picture of your responsibilities.

3. Include useful statistics

Numbers help employers understand the impact of your work. You can include sales figures, customer satisfaction scores or improvements you helped to achieve. Even small statistics can make your CV stronger.

4. Check spelling and grammar

Always proofread your CV before sending it. Use spellcheck and ask someone else to read it as well. A second pair of eyes can help you spot mistakes you may have missed.

5. Tailor your CV to each job

Start with a standard CV, then adjust it for each application. Match your skills and experience to the keywords in the job advert so employers can quickly see that you meet their requirements.

Refreshing your CV during National Careers Week is a great way to boost your job search and make sure your skills shine. It’s a quick update that can have a real impact.
