Celebrating World Poetry Day with Our Learners

To celebrate, we invited our Functional Skills English and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners to share a poem they love or even create one of their own.

World Poetry Day is celebrated every year on March 21st. UNESCO started it in 1999 to support different languages, honour poets, and keep oral traditions alive. The day encourages reading, writing, and sharing poetry to help people express themselves and understand each other.

The theme for March 21, 2026, is “Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion.” It reminds us how poetry can bring people together, celebrate diversity, and connect people across cultures.

We were delighted to receive some wonderful submissions from our learners

This original poem celebrates spring as a time of new beginnings, colour, and life. Monica paints a picture of nature waking up with flowers, grass, and gentle creatures. The poem creates a warm feeling of togetherness and hope for the future.

This poem reminds us that all people are connected, like parts of one body, sharing the same origin. It teaches compassion and shows that ignoring the suffering of others also diminishes our own humanity.

This heartfelt tribute to Eritrea, affectionately called “Saba,” carries pride and longing. The song recalls memories of home, celebrates resilience, and emphasizes unity and the strength of the people.

These submissions show how poetry and song can bring people together, spark creativity, and help us see the world through someone else’s eyes. We are proud of all our learners for sharing their voices and celebrating the power of words on World Poetry Day.
