Dare to Be Different Day
Dare to Be Different Day at Havering Adult College has been a brilliant celebration of individuality, creativity, and autism awareness. Working alongside the Sycamore Trust, the day highlighted the importance of understanding, acceptance, and embracing the many ways people experience and interact with the world. It’s a reminder that being different is something to be proud of, and that our college community thrives when every learner feels seen, supported, and valued.
What We Spotted Across Our Centres Today
The outfits and characters on display were unforgettable. Across our sites, learners and staff fully embraced the theme:
• At Bower Park, a full-sized lion made an appearance, bringing plenty of smiles and a few surprised double‑takes.
• Over at the Brittons Centre, we had funky glasses and crowns everywhere—bright colours, oversized frames, glitter, feathers, you name it.
• A cheerful reindeer wandered through the day’s activities, adding a touch of whimsy.
• And throughout the college, bold colours, quirky accessories, and creative outfits made every corridor feel like a celebration of self‑expression.
A special thank you goes to the learners who attended their Pre‑Course Interviews today. Not one person batted an eyelid at our ICT Tutor proudly wearing a pink cowboy hat—a true testament to the spirit of the day and the supportive, good‑humoured environment we’re proud to foster.
Inclusive Learning Support at Havering Adult College
Our Inclusive Learning Support team plays a key role in making sure every learner can succeed. Support is tailored to individual needs and may include:
• Adjustments to learning materials
• Assistive technology
• One‑to‑one support where appropriate
• Strategies to build confidence and independence
• Guidance for learners with additional needs, including autism and other neurodiverse profiles
The aim is to remove barriers, promote independence, and ensure that every learner feels empowered to achieve their goals. Dare to Be Different Day reflects exactly what we stand for: a community where everyone belongs, everyone is respected, and everyone is encouraged to be themselves.
