School Street Scheme Launches at Brittons Centre: What You Need to Know
Important Changes: School Street Scheme at Brittons Centre
From 2nd June 2025, a new School Street Scheme will start outside our Brittons Centre in Rainham. This means that cars and other vehicles won’t be allowed to drive on the road outside the school during busy times — like when students are arriving in the morning or leaving in the afternoon.
When does this happen?
The road will be closed to most vehicles:
- In the morning when students arrive
- In the afternoon when students leave
Only people with special permission (like local residents or emergency services) will be allowed to drive through during these times.
Why is this happening?
The goal is to:
- Make the area safer for students walking or cycling
- Reduce pollution from cars
- Stop bad parking on pavements and driveways
- Help everyone enjoy a healthier and calmer environment
If you can, try to walk or cycle to school. It’s good for your health and helps keep the roads clear for people who really need to drive.

How is it being enforced?
Special CCTV cameras will be watching the road. They use number plate recognition to check which cars are allowed in.
If someone drives into the zone without permission during the restricted times*, they could get a fine of £130. If they pay it quickly (within 14 days), it’s reduced to £65.
When does this apply?
- Only during Havering school term times
- Only during school run hours (morning and afternoon)
- You can still leave the area at any time — the rule is only about entering
*Please note that Havering Adult College is not responsible for any fines you may receive if you do not follow the School Street restriction times.

i live in Newtons Close where the only way in and out of my cul de sac is via Ford Lane. Will i get a fine driving to and from home between 8 and 9 am and 2.30 and 3.45 pm?

This scheme is something that the London Borough of Havering are introducing to the area and we wanted to ensure our learners are aware of this as it affects our Brittons Centre.
I believe that residents in the area are exempt but may need to register their vehicles with the council do that they are not fined. Please see the link provided https://www.havering.gov.uk/parking-2/parking-tickets-traffic-fines/5#zonetimes and follow their instructions.
